Steak Night

Indulging in the finer things in life can mean different things to different people. To me, it means a home cooked ribeye and mashed potatoes. Now I don’t have the means to indulge in meals like this every night, but tonight was special. We are nearing the end of the semester, my boyfriend and I shared a day off (rare, like once every 2 or 3 months), and we wanted to treat our son as he will be leaving for his grandma’s house to spend Easter weekend.

I think celebrating little things in life is important for my family’s sanity and happiness. The mundane everyday can make it feel like we are just going through the motions trying to make it to the next day. When we get the opportunity we try and gather together and enjoy some time with each other over a nice dinner. A ribeye is a beef steak from the rib section and often has marbeling that creates an unmatched taste. We choose to stick to a classic pairing of steak and potatoes, and added a vegetable. Here’s a run down of how the preparation went for the meal if you want to recreate.

  • Step 1: Peel potatoes, clean ends off of fresh green beans, start 2 pots of boiling water with the first having enough room to fit the amount of potatoes you are using, for our family of three we used six smaller russets. The other is for the green beans.
  • Step 2: Season the steaks with your choice of seasonings, keeping it simple we chose salt and pepper, put the potatoes in the water once it is boiling.
  • Step 3: With your cleaned green beans you will put them into the other pot of boiling water for a short period of time, until aldente (just slightly underdone).
  • Step 4: Get a sautee pan with a few tablespoons of olive oil piping hot, you want to make sure your steaks have set to room temp so as not to seize the meat when you put it in the pan to get a hot sear on each side.
  • Step 5: At this point you should have your sautee pan with steaks in a 300 degree oven until they reach the temperature you prefer. You can also take your soften potatoes and drain the water, adding heavy cream and blue cheese crumbles and mashing or blending them to your desired texture of smoothness.
  • Step 6: Get an additional sautee pan and add some olive oil on medium heat. You are going to use this to finish the aldente green beans, add salt, pepper, and any other seasoning you want.
  • Step 7: With all components finished, plate and enjoy.

Hopefully this gave you an idea of how to prepare a meal similar to this one. I know it’s not as detailed as following an exact recipe, but if you do want to recreate this and have any questions, add them to the comment sections!

So maybe you prefer a hearty pasta dish as your way of indulging…..or ice cream with lots of chocolate syrup and sprinkles. I get it, we all have different preferences, but the point is to treat yourself! You deserve to celebrate you and celebrate life! This meal is something that filled our bellies, filled our table with memorable conversations, and filled our lives with immeasurable joy.
